Lexie was the first dog we brought home at the beginning of our marriage. She lived with us and a husky we also got around the same time named Lyla. They grew up together and had the stereotypical sister like relationship full of annoying each other while protecting and loving each other. Lexie was a great companion that helped us through many years of not being able to conceive (thankfully the Lord blessed us with our first child this year). It seems like Lexie stuck around long enough for us to have our first child and got to see her for a bit before letting go. Whenever the illness that took her begin, we do not know. She hid her pain and everything so well because she loved us and wanted to be strong for us until ultimately it was too much to handle.
Lexie was an amazing German Shepherd. She loved being outside, playing with ball and stick, and cuddling. While you’d think the husky would be the one howling, Lexie was the one who would do it. Every time she’d hear an ambulance outside on the road she would lift her head up and start howling. One time we put on some opera music that was playing in a show on TV and she started “singing” along.
Every time it thundered, she would get scared and come to us to cuddle so we could protect her. But then every time the mailman or delivery driver showed up, she’d return the favor so to speak to protect us from the scary mail by barking and rushing to the door to show her “scary” side, even though when people came over she would turn into a love bug and lay on her back to get some belly rubs.
She was a drama queen and had a lot of goofy quirks about her. She loved to watch my wife make popcorn so she could scoop up any that fell to the floor. She loved chasing squirrel and dear (she one time escaped and chased deer in the woods for hours before I was able to find her). She loved to play in the water when we took her camping. She absolutely loved peanut butter and pup cups from the ice cream stores. She loved being around her family. The only thing she really hated was going for car rides and of course the doctor, but she got to go on a road trip with us all the way to Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota and even got to eat a burger at a restaurant in Deadwood that was made for dogs.
She was a great German Shepherd and family pet. We will miss her presence, her popcorn smelling paws, her hair always shedding everywhere, and her dropping her ball in the water bowl causing it to spill water everywhere on the floor. Thankfully she is no longer suffering and she is at peace. Lord willing we will see her again in heaven.
We love you, Lexie, and you will always have a place in our hearts.
